As Election 2015 begins to wind down, we thought we would bring you our view on the top 5 ridings to watch for protecting our gun rights.
1) Nipissing – Timiskaming, ON
In 2011, Conservative Jay Aspin won this riding by 18 votes over Liberal Anthony Rota. This victory was largely on due to the backlash from locals over Rota’s flip flop on the long gun registry. Election prediction website ThreeHundredEight has Rota poised to win again. Jay Aspin has been a friend of gun owners over the past four years, speaking about 20 times in the House of Commons on firearms issues, and participating in committee meetings to end the long gun registry and on the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act
2) Pontiac, QC
Over the years, Pontiac has been a bellweather riding, alternating between Liberals and Conservatives. In 2011, karate instructor and former Communist Party candidate Mathieu Ravignat defeated Conservative Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon. Ravignat voted against the interests of his rural constituents and with his Ottawa bosses to keep the gun registry and to attempt to block the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. Ravignat’s Conservative challenger is 31 year old Canadian Forces member Benjamin Woodman. Woodman grew up in Shawville, QC and throughout the campaign he has consistently stood up for ending needless red tape around firearms. This riding is a tight three way race between the NDP, Liberals and Conservatives. A few votes will likely make the difference.
3) Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo, BC
Historically, this riding has been a Conservative stronghold. However, the NDP have a star candidate in former judge Bill Sundhu. Conservative incumbent Cathy McLeod has stood up for firearms owners in the last Parliament by speaking repeatedly in favour of the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act.
4) Desnethe – Missinippi – Churchill River
Conservative MP Rob Clarke is a former RCMP officer in northern Saskatchewan. Which means he knows exactly what some of the higher ups are trying to do to ban firearms. He has fought tirelessly against the needless bureaucracy involved in the gun registry. He also was front and centre in correcting misinformation put forward by the Liberals regarding the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. He is being challenged by small town Mayor Georgina Jolibois. She has spent the campaign telling everyone who will listen to ignore NDP Leader Tom Mulcair’s promise to bring back the gun registry.
5) Ajax, ON
What list of riding impacted by firearms would be complete without Turf Mark Holland 2.0? This is another one that will be tight. Current Ajax MP, Immigration Minister, and recent Pickering Gun Show attendee Chris Alexander has a challenge on his hand knocking off the number one Liberal gun registry supporter. No gun owner should rest until Mark Holland is permanently retired from politics.
