Looking for a compact scope that can handle close-in work, but still make practical shots farther out? Primary Arms says the latest entry in its GLx line should do the trick, and it's currently available for pre-orders.
The new GLx 1-6x24mm FFP follows the typical pattern for low-powered variable optics (LPVO) these days. Originally, these scopes were often seen on hard-recoiling rifles or slug shotguns; the low-powered scopes often had more eye relief, and that was a definite benefit on guns with a punishing kick. Now, these lower-powered scopes are more commonly seen on tactical-style rifles, where shooters want minimal magnification for short-range shooting, but the ability to still reach out to distances appropriate for their rifle.
As such, this scope ranges from true 1x magnification to 6x, and is available with the ACSS Raptor M6 reticle, providing ballistic drop compensation for 5.56 and 7.62x51 and other cartridges popular in tactical rifles. The new scope also is available with the ACSS Griffin MIL M6 reticle, offering a MIL grid that works with any caliber or barrel length, once you learn how to use it.
To further suit the buyer's needs the turrets are user-configurable. Again, the idea is to build-in versatility, and the result is that Primary Arms says this is "an excellent option for hunting, competition, or even just punching paper at the range."
The 30mm main tube is made of a 6061-T6 aluminum, and it's only 10.25 inches long, so weight is a low 21.3 ounces. The lenses are multi-coated, low-dispersion glass. The Daylight Bright illumination is supposed to be usable even at high noon, with AutoLive adjusting the brightness of the reticle to match ambient light conditions. With these built-in technologies, this scope essentially works as a red dot at lowest magnification.
Eye relief ranges from 3.3 inches to 3.5 inches, from high magnification to low.
Like other Primary Arms optics, this new entry in the GLx series comes with a lifetime warranty. And, pricing is $699 US, although the scope is only available for pre-order right now. American customers should see availability in Q2, but Canadian buyers might have to wait longer. Talk to your dealer if you want more details, or check out the Primary Arms website. Considering this optic's capabilities, it might be well worth the wait, whether you're looking for something to mount on your tactical rifle or on your hunting rifle (the category that really benefits from an optic this versatile, due to its usability in both thick brush and open spaces).
