New for 2022: Rimfire Nation Discovery Days and Competition Academy

Organizers at the Canadian Rimfire Precision Series are looking to grow their sport again for 2022, with the announcement of the new Rimfire Nation Discovery Days and the Rimfire Competition Academy.

Rimfire precision competition is perhaps the fastest-growing shooting discipline in Canada these days, as high costs and government crackdown on tactical rifles make centrefire competitions less appealing, or outright impossible. You can buy an accurate rimfire and top it with optics for less money than its centrefire equivalent, and the ammunition can also be less money. To be sure, you can also spend a lot of money on rimfire shooting―you just don't have to.

As the sport grows, interest grows as well, and as more and more people hear about rimfire precision, organizers see the potential to educate and bring in even more shooters. For that reason, the crew at the Canadian Rimfire Precision Series have announced Rimfire Nation Discovery Days and the Rimfire Competition Academy to help the sport grow. Here's what to expect from those events.

Rimfire Nation Discovery Days

The Rimfire Nation Discovery Days are kind of like field trips to the range, to explain all the ins and outs of the series. These single-day exhibition events are intended to display the competition's format, with the ability to observe demo stages as well as try equipment out, hands-on. Savage Arms is a major sponsor of the Canadian Rimfire Precision Series this year, and will have its rifles available to shoot (at least, until the organizers' ammo runs out). It's also possible other firearms will be available for demo, or attendees may wish to try their own firearms in the demo stages; at this point, no optics company or ammo company has announced official sponsorship, but organizers hope that happens soon as well.

Demo stages at these events will include:

Outlaw Rimfire Precision Series Stages - steel targets placed between 25-100 yards. (PRS-style match)
Canadian Rimfire Precision Series Stages - steel targets placed between 100-300 meters (PRS-style match)
Rimfire Raceguns - steel targets placed between 10-25 meters (Steel Challenge)
Silhouette - 1/5 scale NRA smallbore steel silhouette targets placed between 40, 60, 77 and 100 meters.
Rimfire Precision Target - Paper targets placed at 50 and 100m

Organizers will list the dates for the Discovery Days events on the group's Events page, but for now, there's nothing listed for 2022. Stay tuned!

Rimfire Competition Academy

Rimfire Competition Academy is less of a demo day, and more of a how-to. At these events, the idea is to get the shooter fitted to their rifle, and help them get it zeroed. If you need help with a ballistic calculator, they'll do that too. The idea is to build the basic skills for rimfire precision such as using a bag, judging wind, etc.

Of course, safety training is also a key part, and a general how-to for planning your competition day (what to bring in your range bag, that sort of thing). The Academy dates will also be posted on the group's Events page when they're listed; for more details on the training days, see here. There's also more info in the Canadian Rimfire Precision Series podcast below; start at the six-minute mark for details on Discovery Days, and the nine-minute mark for info on the Academy.
