Mossberg is introducing four new shotguns in the 590 series. The new pump-action 590S line is very familiar, based on the existing 590 tactical series, which is itself based on the 500 series. The biggest change on the new-and-improved guns is revised internals, designed to cycle 1.75-inch mini-shells. Now, shooters can stuff more than a dozen shells into their 590S, and expect it to work properly from the factory.
According to Mossberg, the company saw owners of existing 590 models resorting to aftermarket upgrades, in order to make their shotguns feed mini shells properly. The new 590S series should make that unnecessary, and some of the new models also come with other out-of-the-box features that shotgunners, particularly competitive shooters, would also include (M-LOK forend, etc.), making these shotguns a practical base for tactical builds.
Unlike some other aftermarket feed systems, the 590S internals also works well with standard 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells.
The new shotgun series includes a standard security-style pump with plain cylinder bore 20-inch barrel and standard corncob forend, and bead sight. There's an updated tactical-style version with 20-inch barrel with Accu-choke threads, ghost ring sights, and M-LOK forend. Both of these shotguns have a standard-style stock.
The new 590S series also has two cut-down shotguns with birdshead-style grips, and forends with straps for control while firing. One model has a 14.375-inch barrel, with accordingly short magazine tube. The other has a 18.5-inch barrel, with longer magazine.
The longest 20-inch barreled versions have magazine capacity of 13+1 1.75-inch shells. The shorter birdshead model has 8+1 capacity with mini shells. The longer birdshead model has 9+1 capacity with mini shells.
Canadian pricing is not yet announced; American MSRP for the two birdshead models and the 20-inch standard-barrel model is $605 USD. The upgraded model with Accu-choke barrel, M-LOK forend and ghost-ring sights is $708 USD.
