Oh fudge, do we really need to explain this? Having ushered many a child into the wonderful fraternity of firearm ownership, the Daisy Red Ryder BB gun is the very definition of an icon. Introduced in 1938 and named after a comic strip hero, the Daisy Red Ryder is a lever-action, spring piston air rifle with a smooth bore barrel and a maximum magazine capacity of 650 BBs. While older models usually fired projectiles at roughly 250 feet per second, the latest models seem to benefit from some modern materials, and many owners report speeds around 375 feet per second after being broken in. That means that it's still 125 feet per second shy of the 500 fps mark, meaning it is not considered a firearm in the legal sense of the word, and can be purchased and owned without a PAL. A great way to team firearm safety and some of the principles of marksmanship, the Daisy Red Ryder's as great a gift now as it was in 1938, and is only marginally more expensive at around $30. Just don't shoot your eye out.
