Bill C-21: Who to Contact

Daniel Fritter in , on June 20, 2022

The following is a list of MPs who either have a disproportionate amount of input on Bill C-21's passage, or who may be vulnerable to losing their next election as a result of how they may vote on Bill C-21. Note that it only includes those politicians from parties who have agreed to support the Liberal gun control agenda.

The Minister Himself

As the Minister of Public Safety and the sponsor of the bill, Minister Marco Mendicino is the ultimate proponent for this bill, and the person in charge of all gun control in Canada. Although currently in hot water for lying to Parliament and the Canadian people when asked to justify his use of the Emergencies Act to bring protests in Ottawa to an end, he's also been caught lying on the gun file - numerous times. Although he's unlikely to withdraw support for Bill C-21, or amend it to exclude licensed gun owners from his new gun control regime and pivot it towards the criminals that use guns in the commission of their crimes, we should never let the sycophantic and misleading behaviour of our elected representatives dissaude us from being heard.

Standing Committee on Public Safety Members

This is the committee that will be studying the bill in-depth, calling and hearing from witnesses, and preparing the formal report and recommending amendments to the House of Commons. As such, these MPs will have an outsized impact on Bill C-21's form and passage, and ensuring that they are well-informed on Canada's existing gun control laws and precisely how Bill C-21 will do nothing to impact criminal use of firearms is paramount.

Vulnerable Seats

These are seats that, in the 2021 election, were won by relatively slim margins - or were reliant on the vote-splitting produced by the highly motivated PPC voters seen in that election. Additionally, it includes many who entered the election as incumbents, but saw their total votes significantly reduced from 2019's totals; in other words their popularity is waning. That, combined with the likely evaporation of many PPC candidates (and their motivated voters and volunteers likely switching to the CPC in light of Pierre Poilievre's expected victory), the margins these MPs won by will be even slimmer in the next election; expected to come even as soon as Fall 2022, or Spring 2023. In short - these are the MPs who we, as an orgnized community, may see defeated in the next election through organized targeting of ridings with strategic voting, and conventional third-party efforts. These are the MPs who should fear losing their seat if they vote to support Bill C-21.

Your MP

Lastly, all gun owners should reach out to their own MP, as no voice is heard more loudly by an MP than a constituent's. If you're unsure of who your MP is, or want to locate their contact information easily, use this link to access their full Parliamentary record. And as a quick reminder; MPs will be taking a break from the House for summer in scant days, but that doesn't mean they should be on vacation. On the contrary, they should have more time to meet constituents in their constituency offices, since they will no longer be doing the monthly commute to Ottawa. Regardless of your MP's party affiliation or seat security, we strongly recommend all gun owners arrange to meet their MP this summer and discuss this bill in person. A more knowledgeable Parliament is never a bad thing.
